Made of plaster, gypsum, water, wood, sand, salt, and crushed gold glass, this art piece is the hungry rising ocean…. starving for the coast, the cliffs, the beach, the river bed. It is our constant and persistent companion… erosion. It is erosion’s whipping wind, soft exposed driftwood, boisterous sea, and groundswells, it’s pull of the moon, cycle of the beating briny waves, flushing and washing and gnashing of quartz and gold into flecks and crystals and dust. Day in and day out the cycle continues, as our oceans warm - rising, pushing, chewing, and surging tirelessly into our boldly and hastily developed idyllic seaside towns.

Using molds, I created plaster casts in the shape of small bricks or building blocks. Encased in each plaster brick are elements you might find on the shore- sand, pebbles, driftwood, sediment, glass, and salt. As a way of honoring the warming oceans, I interrupted the plaster curing process just as the plaster got firm and hot, pulling it from its mold so early that it broke apart at the edges, weakening its structure and compromising its form, so much so that the soft edges eroded and washed away like debris in a wave, leaving only the inner material. The design of this piece in concentric circles speaks to the cyclical fluidity of nature and the repetition and movement of its tides, currents, waves, longshore sand drifts, weather, storms, breaks... and erosion.
